New Yorkers to get a taste of celebrity vegan cheese maker Miyoko Schinner....

Popular author, TV show host and founder of the renowned Miyoko’s Kitchen in California will speak about her fast-growing company’s phenomenal success at a book signing celebration that includes sample tasting, hosted by Vegan Travel Club.

New York City, New York
Can vegan cheeses really taste as good as their dairy-based counterparts? Thanks to Miyoko’s Kitchen, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. From Double Cream Chive, Sundried Tomato Garlic and French Style Winter Truffle to Aged English Smoked Farmhouse and Country Style Herbes de Provence, these award-winning artisanal cultured nut products are as deliciously mouthwatering as they sound.
Now New Yorkers have the chance to meet the woman behind these groundbreaking culinary creations. Recently named one of the nation’s ‘5 Vegans Worth Watching in 2016’ by Associated Press and published on the New York Times website,Miyoko Schinner is heading to town for a special event at VSPOT Organic on St. Mark’s Place on January 26.
Hosted by domestic and international tour operator Vegan Travel Club, the night will include tasting cheeses from the Miyoko's Kitchen collection, along with breads, crackers and more, courtesy of Riverdel, the newly-launched vegan cheese store in Brooklyn; eating lasagne, eggplant rollatini and cheesecake bites made by VSPOT Organic using recipes from Schinner’s cookbooks; and drinking Italian wines courtesy of Vegano Italiano Tours.
“I’m ecstatic to be coming to the east coast for this special event to impress New Yorkers with the wonders of vegan cheese and introduce them to the Miyoko’s Kitchen brand,” says Schinner.
Although new to the cheese market, Schinner is no stranger to vegan cuisine. She’s been promoting sumptuous, decadent, and healthful plant-based foods for the past 30 years, starting out teaching cooking classes in Japanese department stores in the 1980s before opening a wholesale bakery when she lugged 60 pounds of pound cakes in a backpack on trains to deliver them to stores across Tokyo. She penned her first cookbook The Now and Zen Epicure in 1991 to dispel the myth that vegan food couldn’t be gourmet.
She followed this up with the launch of a vegan bakery in San Francisco in the 1990s and four more cookbooks including the bestselling Artisan Vegan Cheese (Book Publishing Company, 2012) and her latest, The Homemade Vegan Pantry: The Art of Making Your Own Staples (Ten Speed Press, 2015). She launched Miyoko’s Kitchen in September 2014.
Schinner is a co-host of the national public television cooking show, Vegan Mashup (season three is currently on air) and a much sought-after vegan travel tours headliner. Last year she dazzled guests on the Vegano Italiano Tour of southern Italy, organized by Vegan Travel Club, with her revolutionary cooking and effervescent personality.
“Miyoko is extremely talented and passionate about quality and it shows in her products,” says Gretchen Sheridan, co-founder of Vegan Travel Club. “She was a delight last year on tour, so much so that we had to have her back this year – it’s a perfect fit. Coming to the NYC event will give people a better insight into where we’re going, who we’ll be meeting and what we’ll be tasting.”
Schinner is equally thrilled at the prospect of another tour of Italy. “Vegano was the height of my travels last year. It really gives you an insider’s view of Italy, letting you touch the culture in an intimate way that would be hard to do on your own. As a culinary journey, it goes to the heart of the cuisine of the region, and Gretchen takes you off the beaten path to let you peek into the real Italy. I’m so happy to be returning again this year,” says Schinner.
Among the topics Schinner will talk about at the NYC event this month are the tour, opening a mini animal sanctuary at the farm she’s just moved to in Marin County, California, and her latest book The Homemade Vegan Pantry. “I’ll share with people why I wrote the book, which is the ultimate guide to filling your fridge and pantry with all the things you'd normally buy – everything from ketchup to mayo to meat substitutes to baking mixes,” she says.
